Competition Auto Group - A Brief History
Competition Auto Group was born when auto enthusiast and professional race car driver Joseph C. Buzzetta founded the business in the form of a small service operation in 1962. Through the years, Mr. Buzzetta added franchises to his service operation, starting with BMW in the mid sixties and Mercedes-Benz in 1969. As the business grew, he moved from his small property on Smithtown Blvd in Nesconset to the location on Middle Country Road where our Competition BMW dealership now resides.
As the business expanded throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mr. Buzzetta renovated and added capacity to better serve his growing client base. At that point, the automotive business proved to be in the family’s blood as Joe Buzzetta Jr. joined the business; In 1989, the Competition Infiniti store was built, and in 1992, Competition Toyota of Middle Island was added to the group. By then, Joe Jr. was joined in the business by brother Jim, and shortly after, by sister Nan. At that point, the group had Mercedes-Benz and BMW together in our original building, plus the stand-alone Infiniti and Toyota stores. In 1994 the group purchased another four acre site on Jericho Tpke in Smithtown across from our Mercedes and BMW store (then known as Competition Imports) and built an exclusive new facility where Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown now resides. We expanded again in 2001 with the addition of Mercedes-Benz of Huntington, and our newest dealership venture is smart Center Smithtown, located just one quarter of a mile west of Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown on Middle Country Road.
Through over four decades, the Competition Auto Group and the Buzzetta family have grown their business on Long Island, and often show their appreciation for their clients’ loyalty and their concern for the community with many many charitable commitments. The list of organizations we work with and support is long, and includes The Long Island Museums, St Charles Hospital, Old Field Farm, PRONTO of Long Island, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the LI 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk, and many more. We are proud to support our community, as we plan to live and work here for many years, and hopefully, many generations to come.
